When I reflect on my Christian journey, one truth consistently stands out: trusting and obeying God is foundational. This isn’t just a matter of following rules or obligations; it’s about placing my life in His hands and believing that His ways are always better than mine. As Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV) says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” But is there any other way to truly live as a follower of Christ? I would argue there isn’t.
The Foundation of Trust
Trust, at its core, is reliance on someone or something. For believers, this means relying on God in every circumstance. I’ve found that trust is built over time, through both the highs and the lows of life. In times of difficulty, it’s easy to wonder if God sees or cares about my struggles. However, Scripture reassures me that He is always faithful. Psalm 9:10 (NIV) reminds us, “Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.”
In the Bible, we see countless examples of individuals who placed their trust in God. Abraham trusted God when he was called to leave his homeland, not knowing where he was going (Genesis 12:1-4). Noah trusted God when he was told to build an ark in preparation for a flood, despite never having seen rain (Hebrews 11:7). Their stories remind me that trust isn’t always about understanding what God is doing, but about having faith in His perfect plan.
Obedience: The Natural Response to Trust
While trust is foundational, obedience is the natural fruit that grows from it. Jesus said in John 14:15 (NIV), “If you love me, keep my commands.” Obedience isn’t about legalism; it’s about a relationship. When I trust God, I’m more willing to follow His commands because I believe they are for my good. Romans 8:28 (NIV) affirms this: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
However, obedience can be challenging. There are times when God’s instructions don’t make sense from a worldly perspective. Yet, it’s in those moments that I am reminded of Isaiah 55:8-9 (NIV), where God says, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways…As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Obedience requires me to set aside my understanding and surrender fully to God’s will.
What Happens When We Trust and Obey?
In my life, I’ve discovered that trusting and obeying God brings peace, guidance, and blessing. This doesn’t mean that challenges or trials vanish, but it means that I walk through them with the assurance that God is with me. Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV) speaks to this, saying, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
A powerful story of trust and obedience in Scripture is the account of the Israelites crossing the Red Sea (Exodus 14). Faced with an impossible situation—an impassable sea before them and Pharaoh’s army behind them—Moses trusted God’s command to “stretch out your hand over the sea.” His obedience led to one of the most miraculous deliverances in the Bible. This reminds me that obedience may not always lead to immediate understanding, but it often leads to miraculous outcomes.
The Struggles with Trust and Obedience
I’d be dishonest if I said that trusting and obeying God is always easy. There are times when I’ve doubted, questioned, and struggled to follow His path. In moments of uncertainty or fear, it’s tempting to rely on my own understanding or take control of situations. But in those times, I am reminded of Peter, who stepped out of the boat to walk on water toward Jesus (Matthew 14:22-33). When Peter kept his eyes on Christ, he walked on the water. But when he focused on the wind and the waves, he began to sink. Like Peter, I need to keep my eyes on Jesus, even when the storms of life rage around me.
Growing in Trust and Obedience
Trust and obedience, like any spiritual discipline, grow as I walk with God. I’ve learned that consistent prayer, time in His Word, and fellowship with other believers all help strengthen my faith. As Romans 10:17 (NIV) states, “Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.” The more I hear God’s Word, the more I am reminded of His faithfulness and His call to follow Him.
When I look at the life of Jesus, I see the ultimate example of trust and obedience. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will” (Matthew 26:39, NIV). Jesus, fully trusting His Father, chose obedience even unto death. His obedience led to the salvation of the world. This challenges me to consider: what might God accomplish through my obedience?
Is There Any Other Way?
At times, I’ve asked myself: is there any other way to live the Christian life besides trusting and obeying? Could I follow Christ and still hold onto control of certain areas of my life? The answer is clear. As believers, there is no other way. Jesus Himself said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6, NIV). Trusting and obeying Christ is not only the way to eternal life but also the way to experience true fulfillment and joy here on earth.
In my walk with Christ, I’ve learned that trusting and obeying God is not just a command; it’s an invitation to live a life of peace, purpose, and joy. While the road may not always be easy, I can rest in the assurance that God is faithful. As Psalm 37:5 (NIV) says, “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this.” There is no other way to live fully as a follower of Christ than to trust and obey Him
