As a believer, the words of Jesus in Matthew 28:19-20, often called "The Great Commission," have been a guiding force in my life. Jesus instructs His disciples, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you." The Great Commission is not just a call for the early church but an active call for us today to spread the Gospel, no matter where we are. In this post, I want to share how this commission shapes my faith and how we, as Christians, can walk it out daily.

Understanding the Great Commission
The Great Commission is found in multiple places in the New Testament, most notably in Matthew 28:16-20 and Mark 16:15-16. These passages make it clear that Jesus entrusted us with the responsibility to share the Gospel and make disciples of all nations. The simplicity of this call is profound, yet the magnitude of it can feel overwhelming at times. However, we are reminded in Acts 1:8 that we are not alone in this mission: "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses."

Why the Great Commission is Relevant Today
In today's world, with so many distractions and competing priorities, it can be easy to lose sight of our mission. Yet, the need for the Gospel has never been more pressing. The truth of Romans 10:14 rings loudly: "How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard?" As believers, we are called to stand in the gap, sharing the love of Christ with a world that is searching for hope and meaning.

Practical Steps for Living Out the Great Commission

Start with your community – Often, we think of missions as something that happens overseas. However, we can begin right where we are, sharing the love of Jesus with our neighbors, coworkers, and friends.

Equip yourself with the Word – To teach others, we must first know the Word of God. 2 Timothy 2:15 reminds us to "study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed."

Pray for opportunities – Ask God to open doors for you to share the Gospel and to prepare the hearts of those you will meet. Colossians 4:3 says, "Pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ."

Be bold in your faith – The Great Commission requires courage. 2 Timothy 1:7 tells us, "For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”

The Great Commission is a responsibility and a privilege. As followers of Christ, we are called to be His hands and feet in the world. Whether through local outreach or international missions, we must carry out this call with boldness and love, knowing that Christ is with us "always, to the very end of the age" (Matthew 28:20).
