Life is a blend of highs and lows, moments of celebration, and seasons of struggle. Yet, as believers, we are commanded in 1 Thessalonians 5:16 to “Rejoice always.” This is not a suggestion but a call to live a life steeped in joy, regardless of our circumstances. Today, I want to share my personal journey of learning to rejoice in both the good and the bad times and how this Biblical principle has transformed my life.

Joy Is a Command, Not a Feeling

One of the first truths I learned about joy is that it’s not dependent on my feelings. The Apostle Paul, writing to the church in Thessalonica, made it clear: “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). Joy is a decision to trust God’s plan, even when life doesn’t make sense.

When I faced a health crisis, this verse became my anchor. I didn’t feel joyful during endless doctor visits and treatments, but I chose to rejoice in God’s sovereignty. I learned that joy doesn’t deny pain; it recognizes that God is working through the pain for a greater purpose (Romans 8:28).

Rejoicing in Good Times: A Heart of Gratitude

Rejoicing during the good times may seem easy, but it’s easy to forget the Giver of our blessings. Psalm 103:2 reminds us, “Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits.” Gratitude helps us remain humble and recognize that every good and perfect gift comes from God (James 1:17).

When my family celebrated milestones, like the birth of a child or a new job, I made it a priority to give thanks to God. These moments of joy became opportunities to declare His goodness to others. Celebrating with a heart of gratitude deepens our relationship with God and strengthens our faith for the valleys ahead.

Finding Joy in Trials

Perhaps the most challenging aspect of rejoicing always is doing so in times of trial. James 1:2-3 offers a radical perspective: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

When I lost a dear friend unexpectedly, this verse felt impossible to live out. But as I leaned into God’s Word, I discovered that joy doesn’t come from the trial itself but from the knowledge that God is refining us. Trials reveal God’s faithfulness, and over time, they produce a harvest of righteousness and peace (Hebrews 12:11).

Practical Ways to Rejoice Always

  1. Spend Time in God’s Presence
Psalm 16:11 says, “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.” Worship, prayer, and meditating on Scripture are vital practices that renew our joy.

  2. Focus on God’s Promises
When I’m overwhelmed, I turn to promises like Isaiah 41:10: “Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.” These truths remind me that God is unchanging, even when life shifts.

  3. Surround Yourself with Encouraging Community
Proverbs 27:17 reminds us, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Fellow believers have encouraged me to keep rejoicing, even when it felt impossible.

  4. Keep a Gratitude Journal
Recording God’s blessings helps me focus on His goodness. Psalm 9:1 says, “I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.”

  5. Choose Worship Over Worry
During stressful moments, I intentionally turn on worship music. Songs based on Scripture lift my spirit and remind me of God’s greatness.

Joy That Points to Eternity

Ultimately, our joy is rooted in the hope of eternity. Revelation 21:4 promises that God will wipe away every tear, and there will be no more death or sorrow. This eternal perspective gives us the strength to rejoice today. As Philippians 4:4 says, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”

As I’ve walked through both blessings and burdens, I’ve discovered that joy isn’t about my circumstances. It’s about the One who holds my circumstances. When we choose to rejoice always, we reflect God’s light to a watching world and declare that He is worthy of our trust and praise.
